Commission rates vary from one bureau de change to another, so you'll just have to ask, but they often use bad commission rates to make up for good exchange rates. Personally I'd always take a few travellers' cheques or a credit card as well just in case anything happens to my money.
Quite franky I am astounded that anyone would consider travelling abroad without a credit card. Even if you only keep it for emergencies - and there are so many possibilities. For example, what if you are taken ill or have an accident, and need to pay for medical treatment or medicine? It is possible that your insurance company will expect you to pay, and then claim the money back from them. If your cash or cheques are stolen, you may need to get emergency cash. And it is also the cheapest way to pay for things while you are there. Do reconsider before you go.
