We travel over to Dublin at least once a year, usually flying, occasionally on the ferry. We have never been asked to show any ID, never mind a passport, apart from when we pick our tickets up at Ryanair and that has to to with their own ticket policy, not Passport control.
Technically you don't need a passport to travel between the UK and Ireland. But scubadiver is right, Ryanair insist on either a passport or photo driving licence.
Also, Ireland is getting very tight on immigration control, so it is wise to carry a passport if you don't have white skin or don't speak English as a first language.
