I have been there several times..... if you can book do so but you can pay at the gates. Get there early , and by early i mean by midday to avoid the traffic , it gets horrendously busy so the earlier the better. Wear casual gear it is super relaxed and there are plenty of sideshows and stalls. hope its dry!!!!!
Just a warning - Cartmel is a small place and the roads are very small so dfward really isn't joking about the traffic! Plus of course there's all the Aug BH traffic heading for the lakes using the same bit of motorway. Try to arrive there by about 6am and you should get there by midday.
Oh and yeah - don't think they can quite insist on tails and hats at Cartmel. It might claim to be posh, but it's basically a village stuck in the middle of nowhere a bit too close to Grange-over-Sands (aka. OAP Central) with really awful roads and no parking.
