my father is 87 years old and had a heart attack 12 months ago. he wants to go to spain for a week but is being quoted 800 for insurance.does anyone know of an insurance company dealing with older travellers or is it possible to buy insurance purely for repatriation.
PS: The main cost of the health element of travel insurance, within the EU, is related to the possibility of repatriation by air ambulance. If your father is taken ill, or has an accident, while in Spain, he'll receive the same free healthcare which Spanish citizens do, as long as he carries his EHIC card with him. If he doesn't take his card, he could be faced with a large bill which most insurers won't pay because they exclude claims which should have been met under the EHIC agreements: http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Policyandguidance/Heal thadvicefortravellers/Gettingtreatmentaroundth eworld/EEAandSwitzerland/DH_4114793
try Free Spirit on 0845 230 5000 or www.free-spirit.com
avoid Marrs Insurance, Holiday Services, Medi Cover and Diabetes UK. too expensive.
also try Help the Aged
www.helptheaged.org.uk and Age Concern www.ageconcern.co.uk.
you will have to shop around and have to speak directly to them at some stage and believe me its time consuming, you can spend up to 30mins per call.
good luck and pls post which one was cheapest and which one you chose.
Be aware that a EHIC card will only be honoured by hospitals within the Spanish health service. Private clinics will leave you with a big bill. It is imperative that you ask to be sent to a health service (public) hospital if you require medical treatment.
