When you say you've tried "the usual" what do you mean, exactly? Do you mean the British Airways site etc.? Have you tried places like www.expedia.co.uk? (Just had a quick look on there, and most flights from London to Newark are around 350 but it could be even cheaper from different airports, leaving and/or coming back on different days) It would also help if you wouldn't mind telling us where you're flying from and we could help you find the cheapest flights.
A random week anda half in October costs about 350.00 with American Airlines through Expedia. I just found one on www.statravel.co.uk (I'm sure there probably is an STA Travel in a Manchester Uni Union, but you can book online anyway) and for the same time in October it costs 190. You may well need to connect in Chicago. Have you asked in travel agents yet? Not usually the best option, but you never know.
Why Newark? Flights tend to be cheaper on the more frequent routes (JFK for NYC), and Newark has a higher commute cost if you're going into NYC because of crossing the state line. Of course if you're going to New Jersey it all makes sense... but then why Manchester? You may well find a cheaper flight from LHR and find the connection is cheaper than the difference.
Try cheapflights.co.uk, I've just checked it out and they say that Scandinavian Airlines fly from Manchester to Newark and for that time of the year its 309, if you leave it til the begining of Nov. you can get a flight for 254. You could also try the websites KLM, US Airways, Continental Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and Air France you all fly from Manchester to Newark as well. If any of those websites ask you for the Airport Codes Manchester is MAN and Newark is EWR
