walk
hitchhike
If you're in the UK then obviously you'll have to swim first. If travelling in August i'd set off now.....
sorry it's Friday afternoon. can you tell?
Probably Greyhound bus. It takes about 8 hours and the full fare is $70, about 40 at today's exchange rate. The Greyhound website is http://www.greyhound.com/

someone has too much time on their hands! thanks sylvday
Greyhound or Train would be the cheapest way. Both go to Montreal direct from New York. The best way however would be to hire a car. Slightly dearer but some of the off the beaten track scenery is fantastic. You can remain in NY state all the way to the Canadian border (Montreal is only 60 miles inside of Canada) or you can cut through Massachusettes, New Hampshire, Vermont and across Lake Champlain. Either route is do-able in a day. If you've never been before, both cities are fantastic. Have a great time.
I used the Amtrak train service to get from NY to Montreal. It was amazing, I think I did a night journey which meant I didn't have to pay for a hotel (I was a poor student) plus the scenery was amazing.

I dont think walk is the cheapest way... however ;) , take a look at flights here, http://www.orbitz.com/ theyre pretty cheap... unless you want to drive, i think its about 6 hours straight through.
