travelling to see the northern lights
Hi, does anyone have any knowledge/experience of where abouts you are most likely to see them (i know within the arctic circle)
norway?
alaska?
canada?
Has anyone been? was it worth it?
I went into the travel agents today and to be honest they knew less than i do!

I lived in North Norway for two years, in a place called Tromso. On my 21st birthday (Mid September) the Northern lights appeared in the sky as I was walking home from my party. They were so bright I was quite taken aback and could easily understand how the Vikings had interpreted them as being a sign that the Gods were angry about something. I have always loved Norway and the air is so clean there that you should always get a good view of Nordlys (that's the Norwegian for Northern Lights) from Tromso.
I hope this helps,
Cherie.

Hi There Bednobs
I used to work on Cruise Ships, and when we did our Alaska season we got a couple of great displays of the Northern Lights. I seem to remember that the best display was late season (which would have been September time).
Alaska is an awesome place to visit too ! ;-)
Hope this helps.

You could also consider Iceland - but remember that even if it is a clear night you are by no means guaranteed a display, and if it is cloudy you will not see anything either. The second half of October onwards and into the new year is the sort of time they can be expected. They are indeed a fascinating phenomenon, especially if you get the full colour shifts: from yellow through green to red (the last used to be regarded by some as a bad omen, perhaps still).
