But if you do want to get married there, simply approach the local church or registry office (yes, there is one) and make an appointment. In answer to the other parts of your question, these things are routinely checked but he doesn't have to live with you so long as you have proof of marriage (e.g. certificate).
Buttercup and Husband to be - We had to book in advance for Gretna Green Registry Office [tel: 01461 337648] but they may have cancellations. You'll need to contact them to see what documentation you'll need. Try this link http://www.gretnaweddings.com/

think the blacksmiths @ Gretna Hall [was featured on TV awhile back] are also now registered. If not well worth a visit, they'll also do the old fashioned wedding from years ago over the anvil. Lover's Leap Lodges were an ace place to stay. Don't be put off by the seemingly tackiness air of the place. If there's just the two of you going, one of you will have to grab two witnesses from off the street - we had to. Never had such a wonderful day in all my life . We flew up to Glasgow and car hired down. Other nearest Airport is Newcastle, or if you're rich you might be able to hire & fly into Carlisle. Good Luck to you both & every Happiness XXX
