i am going travelling in america for 7 weeks. when we are in california we are borrowing a car off my mates aunty! does anyone know how we stand with regards to insurance?

Have your friend check with his aunt to see if her insurance will cover you. Different types of insurance cover one or more drivers but most likely you will be covered on a regular insurance policy.

Yep, I agree. Check with his aunt. Most policies in the US are for any driver but it's worth checking about liability insurance. The aunt's policy might not cover you for any personal injury claims, which are a lot more common over there.
