If you can get to the passport office in person they can normally do you one in 4 hours.
You MUST book first, dont just turn up.
I was due to fly to Canada on business one saturday afternoon and noticed in the morning my passport had run out.
I drove to the London office (from the Midlands) and got one in about 3 hours and got my flight. Phew !

The UK is not a signatory to the Schengen Convention (which allows passport-free travel between member states). You therefore need a passport to travel.
