If your son's travel arrangements aren't until late in the day, he might be able to get his passport renewed if he can get to a passport office (and then to the airport or ferry terminal) in time. It's essential to have an appointment but the Passport Advice Line operates a 24 hour service (0870 521 0410) so they might be able to find a vacant slot for him tomorrow. I once woke up on a Saturday morning and realised my passprt had run out, and I was flying to Canada that afternoon at 3pm.
I drove from Birmingham down to the Passport office in London, got my new passprt in about 3 hours, then drove to Heathrow and got my plane.
So it can be done, but without a valid passprt he will not be able to fly.

Thanks for the reply. I hope he makes it. (The flight isn't until 1420. Latest check-in is 1320 with checked baggage or 1335 with hand baggage only). Personally, I think I'd have forked out the 90 fare for the 1405 easyJet flight ex Bristol, which is a lot nearer to Newport than Exeter is ;-)
