Fredrington USA?? Help!

I have been researching my family tree and have discovered one of my ancestors was from somewhere in America called Fredrington (For). I cannot find this place on any map, nor can I find what the 'For' stands for! Can anyone possibly help??

Do you know what state? I thought maybe the For was Flor as in florida, but no matches.

There seems to be one in Canada.

There is a fredrington in Australia in Nsw South Wales, any chance they might be from a different continent.

There is no other info apart from the fact she was born in 1851 and where it says birthplace it has Fredrington (For) USA. That's it! We have looked at the original doc and there doesn't appear to be a mistake. At the time of the census (1881) she is shown as living in Salford. I was wondering if the 'For' isn't a state or anything but could mean 'foreigner'??
The place doesn't appear to exist, was wondering if the name has changed since 1851!
We have had it confirmed by someone else (a very distant relative) also researching their tree that she came from USA.

We thought that too but again I can't find any reference to a Fort Fredrington.
It is a mystery!

I have discovered that my relative was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada -not Fredrington as stated on 1881 census!
Still don't know what the 'for' was for tho...

you could try posting this under Genealogy (it's a subsection under History) - if it's a common abbreviation, someone like Dot Hawkes may be able to help
