I am holidaying in Canada and going to the US for a few days. As a UK citizen, what happens at the border crossing to the US? Does the visa waiver scheme still operate? WE are going by coach (amtrak) and will the bus stop and let us sort out all the necessaries, and do i need to do anything before i leave for Canada?

I think you need to check with your bus company. The Visa Waiver programme operates if you have full UK passport and no police record, but will the bus be prepared to wait for you to complete the formalities as I believe Canadians need no more than wave a drivers license.
