I've used my Clydesdale Bank Maestro card (debit card) to obtain cash from ATMs in New Zealand for the last 2 holidays (beware most banks charge a fee). However, the best bet is to phone your bank to check and it's also a good idea to let them know where you are going anyway. A friend had his card 'cloned' in Heathrow on his way to Oz. The bank became suspicious when 3000 transactions appeared on his card for British flights when he had told them he would be in Oz.

British debit cards are not accepted in retail outlets/restaurants in NZ so I've always used cash or my credit card for these things.
