Is it possible to build your own itenerary? or is it cheaper to book with an established company and buy their package?

It might well be best to buy an Amtrak 15 or 30 day ticket.

You can certainly built your own itinerary with careful planning. Download the schedules from the amtrak website, look at where the trains go and work the trip out. You can have a 30 days pass for between �190 and �260 depending whether you want to cover just the east or west, or the whole country. We have done coast to coast, stopping off along the way, picking up a car for a few days and getting off the beaten track and it was one of the most enjoyable trips we have ever done.
