Flying to Ireland with a car in the 60's
4 Answers
Does anyone remember being able to transport a car to Ireland by plane in the 1960's ? I believe it was a service lasting only a few years. I went with my family and I know it was extremely expensive. Can anyone help ? Many thanks.

The firm was I think British Air Ferries and if you google that name you will see at http://www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?a irlinesearch=British%20Air%20Ferries%20-%20BAF &distinct_entry=truethe sort of aircraft that I believe was used on both routes (the bottom one). It is the one that looks eerily close to being a harbinger of the front end of a 747.
I'm pretty sure the planes were Bristol Freighters. They had two huge nose doors and a ramp for loading wheeled vehicles. I think the cross-channel service flew from Lympne (wasn't it called "The Channel Airbridge" for a time?) - or was it Southend? Maybe both.....
I had a feelng that the Irish service flew from somewhere in Cheshire, but I can't think where offhand, and I may well be wrong - it's a long time ago!
