There's a new book about Everest out by by Walt Unsworth which might be worth a try.

Top of the list in Brit George Leigh Mallory who pioneered mountaineering in the 1920s. In 193 a UK expedition led by Col John Hunt reached the summit with Ed Hillary and Goerge Lowe. Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler climbed without oxygen in 1978.
