Can anyone tell me what is the maximum size and weight for a carry on flight bag?. I can't seem to find out this info anywhere, and I wouldn't want to get to the airport and have problems.

That was quick ,thanks ,do you know about the weight too?
You're welcome. I can't find anything about the weight, but I can't think of a time that my hand luggage has ever been weighed though.

As long as you're not filling it with bricks, you should be fine.
Depends on the airline but about 15 lbs

9" x14"x22"

When you say TALL does that mean that if I have a longish sports back the length (under 56cms) could count as height if you stand it up that way!

Actually chrisrich and dakota have slightly different answers if you work it out,do either of you have a web-site where you got the info or does it depend on the airline?
There's a diagram on here ....

Damn, my bag is 27cms ,do you think they would measure it? It's shorter than the max.length but just 2cms out on the end.

Do all these rules about liquids still apply? ie. no shampoos and deoderant over 100mls etc. I haven't flown for a couple of years!
This is what it says about liquids:

Only limited quantities of liquids may be carried through security control as hand baggage. This includes bottled drinks, suntan lotion, fragrances, cosmetics and toiletries.

The following restrictions apply to all liquids, creams, gels, pastes and aerosols taken through security control:

Liquid items may only be carried in containers holding up to 100ml.

They must be carried separately in a single transparent, re-sealable plastic bag.

The bag must be no larger than 20cm x 20cm (8in x 8in) and all items must fit inside so that it closes properly.

At security control the bag must be placed separately on the conveyor belt for screening.

Liquid items larger than 100ml should be packed in your hold luggage - otherwise they will be confiscated.

Exceptions to the 100ml rule can be made for baby food or milk. However, you should only carry what you need for the flight, and you may be asked to taste these items at security control.

Good job I posted the original question, as it hadn't even occurred to me.I was hoping just to take hand luggage on this short family break to avoid all the hassle with hold luggage but it looks like we'll have to take a suitcase after all. All our shampoos and toiletries come in larger than 100mls.
Thanks for the info, Dakota
You're most welcome.

If you're looking to save time by not hanging around to pick up your suitcase from the travellator as and when the baggage handlers decide to do it (OK, that might be an unfair statement, but it DOES seem to take an age!), then you could always just buy your shampoo and conditioner when you arrive at your destination?

Yeah, I thought of that but as we're only going for a long week-end, I didn't want to waste time provision shopping, and finding all the right products for my kids (you know how teenagers are) . It would probably take longer than waiting for the luggage! Well maybe, here's hoping..
different airlines have different rules. I think Virgin allows only about 5 kilos, others allow 7 or more.
Tesco, Asda and Superdrug all do minature versions of toiletries ideal for travelling. I went to Athens last year for a few days and took only hand luggage. You are limited to 10 items per bag (and each one has to be under 100 mls). This includes mascara, lipstick and foundation. Luckily I was travelling with a friend and her daughter so between us we managed everything.
