We've had 3 short breaks in Salzburg and we're looking forward to our fourth. It's a great city and has easy access to the wonderful lake and mountain scenery of the "Salzkammergut" - and you can easily get to Bavaria, too. I love Austria and can' t think of anything bad to say about it. It's not even very expensive - although the weak pound will make a difference, of course.
Hi
I used to work in Austria and cannot really say a bad word about the place. The people are very friendly if a little reserved. The transport network is punctual and not too expensive. Hotels are clean, tidy and well looked after. The scenery is fantastic both in winter and summer and the temperature is normally around 22-25 in the summer although over 30 is not uncommon. The 1 downpoint can be the weather though as it does tend to rain alot throughout the year although it can be sunny and hot for weeks on end so really you take a chance much like in the UK!
The Euro being not very high at the moment will make things slightly more expensive but it is no worse than the UK and as most people think it will be expensive they are surprised to find things are not that bad when they arrive.
There are literally hundreds of places to visit wherever you stay in the country from natural Glaciers to Salt mines to lake cruises to cog railways.
If you want to know anything more specific, feel free to send me a message
Good luck

Afternoon!
You are probably better off with B&B. There are not many self accomodation units in Austria so you would have much better choice with b&B or Half board.
If you like flat walking and lakes I would suggest St Gilgen or St Wolfgang which are situated on a lake and about 1 hour from Salzburg. If you like mountain walking I used to live in Alpbach which is an hour from Innsbruck, but many resorts offer a combination of walking aaand sightseeing probably the best being Zell am See / Kaprun or Kitzbuhel / St Johann all of which are about 1 1/2 hours from Salzburg.
If you fancy something a bit different Obergurgl is a village at a height of 2000m which offers spectacular walks above the snowline and amongst glaciers although it is very small with not much else to do and is a couple of hours from Innsbruck. People either love it or hate it!!
To be honest most resorts are only a couple of hours from either Salzburg or Innsbruck at the most and you could also go to Munich and get a train into the heart of the Tirol.
From my time over there I would give the following as the top 5 places in order of guests staying there in the summer
1 - Zell am See / Kaprun
2 - Kitzbuhel
3 - Soll / Ellmau
4 - Alpbach
5 - Mayrhofen / Finkenberg
Wherever you go I am sure you will have a great time
