The owner of my newsagent asked me if I could find out the following:
Her niece and her husband are of Indian nationality and have just a baby born here about 5 weeks ago. They are all three going back to India in about 4 weeks. Can they have a British passport for the baby or has the baby to be included in the parents (Indian) passport?
The internet is pretty vague on this subject.

Tell them to phone the Home Office for advice:

First child passport

To apply for a first 5-year child passport your child must be under 16 and either:

* a British citizen
* a British overseas territories citizen
* a British overseas citizen or
* a British subject.

If you are not sure whether your child belongs to one of these groups you can check the rules and eligibility, contact your local Passport Office or call our 24-hour Passport Adviceline 0870 521 0410 (see terms and conditions).
The child will be a British Citizen (and therefore entitled to a British passport) if either, or both, of the parents were legally settled in the UK at the time of the child's birth (or if either, or both, hold British Citizenship).

However (quote): "Even if you were born in the United Kingdom, you will not be a British citizen if neither of your parents was a British citizen or legally settled here at the time of your birth. This means you are not a British citizen if, at the time of your birth, your parents were in the country temporarily, had stayed on without permission, or had entered the country illegally and had not been given permission to stay here indefinitely.":

If the child is not eligible for a British passport, his/her parents will have to apply for an Indian passport for him/her. (In common with other countries, India no longer permits a child's name to be added to a parent's passport):
