Southend had this country's longest pier ... but for what purpose was it built?

Just to be a pier, Im afraid. It was one of the great Brunlees piers, and although used for pleasure steamers, was really designed with mainly foot leisure traffic in mind. It has been used as a convoy assembly point by the admiralty, though.
