hotels in new york

My daughter and her friend are going to New York in November - can anyone recommend a good, clean, cheap, safe hotel in New York as they will be sight-seeing and using it only for sleeping in. They have booked tickets to the statue of liberty and the big shopping centre. Any suggestions will be very welcome.

The Milford Plaza. It is just one block from Times Square. It is clean and comfortable, also safe, as to access the lifts you have to show your room card. I have also stayed in the Pennsylvania Hotel, which is slightly cheaper, but the rooms are not as nice and even though it was advertised that you needed to show your room card to get to the lifts in practice this was not so. There must have been all sorts of people roaming the corridors in the Penn as every day there were advertisements for pizza deliveries etc shoved under the door. This never happened at the Milford Plaza.

Hotel 414, it's just off Broadway. We went last November and LOVED it - I booked it through Expedia. It was very well priced, clean,comfortable and everyone was really friendly - I'd recommend it to anyone, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would have no problems going there again. You're literally 5 mins walk from Broadway, 15 mins from Empire State Building & Macy's, and 5 minutes from the underground (get the red line) to get to the State of Liberty

Very central - half a block from Macys and one block from Madison Square Gardens. Ideal, and really well priced for the location, quality and you also get a continental breakfast included in the price - unheard of in NYC!!
