Is it ok to drive in Europe (especially france) when i only have an old style licence?

Depends how old your old style licence is. If it's a pink one - OK, but if it's the even older green one some countries won't accept it.
France is OK anyway.
If you are hiring a car some companies have stricter rules than local driving laws. And some won't bother to enforce local laws even if you are not entitled to drive....
