While visiting Canada from the UK next year I am travelling with friends down to Mexico. This involves a change at Los Angeles airport. Will I need a visa to pass through the US?

You will almost certainly need the same documentation as to enter the US. However, as long as you're a UK citizen and have a machine-readable passport you should not need a visa, but will be covered by the US Visa Waiver Program - as long as the US doesn't change its entry requirements again before your trip. Keep your eye on the US Embassy website at http://www.usembassy.org.uk/
YEs you will, you'll have to be stamped in and out of the state - when i flew home from mexico i waited for AGES at Miami to be stamped in, only to be stamped out three hours later....
By "visa", I think Becks is simply referring to a stamp in your passport, NOT to the sort of visa that you have to get in advance, which is what I've assumed you mean.
If you remain in transit at LAX, surely you will not pass through Immigration and therefore will not need a visa, nor get a stamp in your passport. Why not ask the airline?
