Alabama and beyond!

I would love to go to Alabama or the deep south in America but you rarely see package deals to these places. Has anyone been recently? Just wondered what it was like, how you got on and what would be a good time of year to go? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

Personally whenever I go to the USA I usually hire a car and drive myself -the easiest and most flexible way to get around (it's cheaper if there is more than one of you, of course). I don't know Alabama but have seen and enjoyed other southern states including Georgia,Mississippi, South Carolina, Louisiana and Florida, which may not count. Now is a pretty good time to go; warm but not too hot (summer is very hard work).

Thank you SO much jno for your information. I watched Stephen Fry on TV last night and he went to where you have been. It looked beautiful and makes me want to go even more. As for driving, I'm a bit nervous so will have to take someone with me who isn't!
