I have a one week travelcard zones 2-5. Can it be used to go through zone 1 underground stations in order to get to a zone 2 destination?

No, the card reader will know that you've gone through Zone 1.

If you stay underground it won't matter as the card is only read on entering and when you exit the underground at your destination
