Getting away with murder

Only in soaps. How many can you think of?
The one I can remember furthest away in time is Eric Pollard from Emmerdale, when he was in Italy.
What is the allure of the soaps? Is it the fact that we can live vicariously, the thrill of being in a situation that we may never be in, or want to be in?
Should we want our soaps to have a moral climate, one where miscreants get punished for their deeds? Or is it enough that we can experience these crimes on the screen and then breathe a sigh of relief when we turn the OFF switch?
Are there some people so totally immersed in these daily stories that they believe, like Eric Pollard, and others in other soaps, that it`s OK to get away with crimes?
