I spend a month in Tenerife every winter - and I agree Americas and Cristianos is full of people hassling for money.
I only go because I have a free holiday (just pay for the flight) and the weather is fabby. I stay in Silencio - it's a bit run down, but hassle free, and it's easy enough to get around. My friend who lives there has a car so I get to go all over the place; the balcony is sea front so I watch the dolphins in the bay and the boats going by and my two favourite Canarian restaurants are very close by, so I have a good time.
I certainly wouldn't go there if my friends didn't live in Tenerife, and I couldn't bear to stay in Cristianos or Americas. Nothing remotely Spanish or Canarian about them.

yeah, it is just a dump. loads of British people go there and have kind of ruined it. it used to be very nice but now its lost its history and has become tarty. gone are the days when you would say: 'I'm going to Tenerife!' and people would get excited. now its turned into, like i said, a tarty place. Sorry to depress you but it's true.
