The only possible justification is if you either get it for nothing (eg inherit) or are happy to spend every holiday (for the rest of your life) at the place where you originally bought. And even then I would issue a very strong caution. Main reasons - it always costs far more than you expect (try adding it up with real prices), the choice is never what you think it will be, companies go to the wall all the time, and ask yourself (in this one especially) what are you actually buying, and what guarantees do I have? Note; a guarantee is only a guarantee if it is cast iron!
I undertsand II is very similar to RCI who we have timeshare with. As for BenDtoy's answer I know that timeshare did get a bad name years ago but we have had no trouble with RCI. Also when you buy timeshare you DON'T have to go to the same resort every year as BenDtoy says. We have a timeshare in Gloucestershire and have never used it because we "bank" the week and use it elsewhere (anywhere in the world in fact). There is now a points system which works in a similar way where you can have short breaks rather than a full week. Yes it can be more expensive than a standard holiday package but the quality of resorts is in many cases outstanding, e g castles with huge rooms , golf resorts etc. We went to St Mellion in Cornwall and honestly we could have moved in lock stock and barrel and still had room to spare.
