It is possible to fly independently to Tromso from Stansted (with norwegian, http://www.norwegian.no/ ), but the best way to see the northern lights (in Europe at least), is from the deck of the coastal "hurtigruten" boats. These aren't cruise ships but working boats plying most of the ports between Bergen and Kirkenes. See http://www.hurtigruten.co.uk/northern-lights.a sp for some ideas.

Ditto to mushrooms comment. It is eye wateringly exensive. I know as I'm due to go in 10 days time. (yippeee). The bad news is that this isn't a good time to go as the chances of seeing the northern lights depends upn sunspot activity and that has been very low of late. I'm going with Taber holidays but if you don't mind sea travel Hurtigruten have some good offers at the moment where they pay your air fare to Norway.
