Hi, We're going to Mexico this Aug and I was wondering about Malaria tablets. The travel agent says they're not worth it and that the side effects are horrendoes. Any thoughts? Hx

I don't know whether they are recommended for Mexico or not but I have taken them before and suffered no side effects whatsoever! I wasn't even told that there could be any.
personally i would speak with a health professional. After all i wouldn't book my holiday at my doctors, so i wouldn't expect medical advice from a travel agent
We went last May and had to have injections a few weeks before going. We were also given advice by the surgery nurse on how to prevent getting bitten so it's worth enquiring at your surgery. By the way, we didn't suffer any side affects from the jabs.
Depends where you are going in Mexico - some areas it's definitely advised.

http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/ has a map showing the areas at risk
dzugs link probably covers it, but I have been to Cancun and was only told that I didn't need to take malaria tablets and would only require them if I was travelling to central Mexico.

I have had malaria tablets in that past when travelling to ither destinations and have never had any side effects (nor was I warned about any). The only problem is they are quite big tablets, therefore hard to swallow. (At least the ones I had were).
i didnt have any side effects when i had malaria tablets for india, but my friends boyfriend swears they were making him loopy and stopped taking them !!
