However nobody could walk round the whole of the coastline because some of the land is private, there are docks and military areas you could not walk through and so on.
However you could make a good stab at it by using existing walking routes.
For example there is the South West Coast path which is 630 mles and runs from Minehead in Somerset to Pools in Dorest.
Then there is the Norfolk Coast Path that runs along the north norfolk coast.
You just need to find a load more of these official routes, then join them all up together.
I am asure someobdy has done it.

VHG's link seems to have lost over 3000 miles!
I'll stick with putting my trust in the Ordnance Survey ;-)

Here is someone who has done it, and wrote a book about it

My guess there is no definitive answer as to the length of Britains coast, and it all depends how you measure it.
Where actually is the coast, when it is high tide or low tide?
Do you include islands?
Do you include river esturies?
And if so how much of them?
How do you measure places like Poole Harbour?
You may find that the ordnance survey people measure it one way, other people may measure it another way.
This would explain the wide variance in different estimates.
