Or is it just unavoidable if one wants to protect their stuff from being stolen? Is it necessary to buy a one time use locker for $3 when I plan to use it at least four times? Any tips on hiding one's stuff at say a theme/water park?

You don't say why you have your things with you. If you are staying at a hostel and have to vacate during the day, most have a room to lock you luggage in until you return the next night. If you have everything you own with you, I don't see any other way then to store it in a locker during the day if you do not want to carry it with you. Most places such as the water park you mention will charge you a fee for a locker anyway.
