Wineboxes on planes

Has anyone ever travelled by plane and put a winebox in their checked baggage? We are going on a cruise and usually take a bottle of wine on board. Our favourite wine is not available in Italy where the boat leaves from and, of course, you can't take liquids in you hand luggage any more. A wine box seems the best way but I am not sure.

My son and his wife always put wine boxes in their hold luggage when they go cruising. It's never caused a problem. Have a great time!!

It's a 'ship' not a boat. Anyway, so long as you take out a couple of glasses of wine first to relieve the pressure then it should be OK. Wrap it in a lot of ziplock bags first just incase.

bear in mind that cruise ships have been known to confiscate liquor from people trying to bring it aboard (which would affect their drink sales). Check the company's rules.

I often put a case of wine in the hold of a plane. Never had a problem. I use shaped polystyrene to keep it secure. Remember that it will count towards your baggage allowance though.

Why not risk a different type of wine in Italy? I believe they produce a little of their own.

jno -The cruise company will not confiscate wine of champagne. They will take beer and spirits though. I have curised with them over 20 times and never had a problem.

auntie bertie - I know the difference between a boat and a ship, I just didn't think it was relevant to my enquiry. You have hit upon my point, ie. what pressure? The wine in a wine box is sealed in a bag which appears to have no air in it. Do you know something I don't?

Thugulike - considered this but baggage allowance full (taking wife!!)

Lil O'lady - Regrettably, I don't have time to go shopping between the time the plane lands and the ship sails. In any event the Italians do not grow the variety of grapes which make the wine I like and which does not give me a headache. They sell the wine on board at �28 a bottle. 3 litres in a winebox costs �12.
