Walks/Sails from Balestrand, Norway
Are there any recommended short ferry trips and not too difficult walks around this area? Going in September.

Don't know much about walks ect the fjords are out this world, I can recommend Bergan, expensive Norway, far from cheap. You can fly to Copenhagen pick up ferries that do the fjords with different stops everyday, or you can get a cruise ship doing the same.
From Balestrand you can take the Fjaerland ferry, this gives you just enough time to walk to and visit the Glacier Museum - timetable at http://www.fjord1.no/filesystem/2009/04/fjerla nd_2009_1544.jpg
and details of the museum at http://www.bre.museum.no/ (and click "English").
Fjord1 also operate a tourist boat to Flam, start point of the Flamsbanen railway, http://www.fjord1.no/filesystem/2009/04/balest rand_flom_2009_1542.jpg but unfortunately this doesn't give you enough time to make the train trip and get back the same day.

further, if you have a car, the Briksdal glacier is a great day's walking, http://www.briksdalsbre.no/ , though it's a bit of a roundabout drive from Balestrand via the Dragsvik Ferry, Sogndal and the 2 long Fjaerland road tunnels.
