Check out Expedia.co.uk for travel and hotels.
I stayed in a hotel in NY called The New Yorker - mid town Manhattan.. quite nice - check it out - not too expensive and central to all the places you would want to go...

No particular hotel recommendations (we recently stayed in the Hampton Inn Times Square, which was great but a bit above the rate you quoted) but agree that staying in midtown is best - you'd like to walk to Times Square, Central Park, Lincoln Center, Columbus Circle. Everything else is in Manhattan is a short subway ride.
If it's your cup of tea go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Annex in Soho - they have a great (temporary) exhibit on John Lennon's NYC years. Also David Byrne's big suit.

Flight prices are likely to go up rather than down if you wait, so I'd book now. And 300 isn't bad at all. I stayed at the Milford Plaza which is just one block from Times Square. It is very secure as you have to show your hotel key to gain access to the lifts (I have stayed in another hotel - The Pennsylvania - which advertised this, but in reality you didn't have to show your room key and all sorts of people were wandering around pushing take away pizza leaflets under room doors).

I'm so envious - I went in December and it's such a great time of year to go - really magical.
