Do I need to get an IDL if I am hiring a vehicle in the States, and if so where do I get ome. Many thanks in advance.

You do not need an IDP to DRIVE in the USA. You MAY need it to hire a car, but I've never actually come across a company with this requirement.

You can get it from the AA RAC or selected Post Offices. About a fiver, valid one year

If you do get one you will need your UK licence as well - the IDP is not valid on its own.
