Has anyone any tips/thoughts on the above train journey. We intend to do a day return at the end of this month. Would a slow or fast train be advisable? Does Carlisle offer more than a couple of hours for a visit? Many thanks for any information.

Carlisle is about a short day's worth of a visit - the historic town centre is small and walkable, Tulllie House Museum & the Castle couple of hours each, nice caff / restaurant in Tulle House. Lovely indoor market. Mostly people then go on to visit Hadrian's Wall - there is a public bus but you'd need more than your day return to fit that in.
There are free guided tours of the cathedral which are excellent too.
