But if there was such a hole it wouldn't go staright through the centre of the earth, as Australia is the nearest large landmass to exactly the other side of the earth. Sorry to be a bit pedantic there.

I guess you would go up and down a few times before coming to rest in the centre of the earth.

Mind you, as Molly points out, you would be a tad on the warm side.
