I'd go for Glasgow
Go to Glasgow, I think you can get a train from Paisley to Dumfries?
^ that's Glasgow Airport Abbotsinch - alternatively you could fly to prestwick which we believe will take you on the train from Kilmarnock to Dumfries?
prestwick is the closest airport to dumfries, approx 66 miles. glasgow airport is next at 85 miles, but the roads are better, so the journey time from dumfries is the same, 1h40mn (although that might depend on the time of day, as driving from glasgow will require use of the M8). newcastle is approx 90miles, but hardly any of the journey is on dual-roads, so the journey would be over 2 hours.
As Mushroom25 indicates, Prestwick is nearest. If your screen name is an indication of your location, Ryanair fly to Prestwick from Malaga. (The only UK airport with flights to Prestwick is Stansted).

Otherwise it might be best to choose whichever airport has the best car hire deals.

Would get the total cost's of travelling via both airports.
