is it the new yorker you are staying in? i went to new york for 10 days and covered most of the main attractions and some of the lesser well known ones too i loved it! a walk across the brooklyn bridge is a must, Brooklyn is lovely to stroll around if you want away from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. Leave plenty of room in your suitcase for all your shopping! take a good travel guide with you i used a small pop up new york one. Enjoy!!

Obviously the Empire State. I went up there at night and it was much more exciting than the day because you can see all the lights. Metropolitan Museum`s good. Central Park. Bloomingdales which is like their Harrods is good for a mooch.
A lesser known but brilliant attraction is the Circle Line tour. It`s a boat ride right around the island of Manhattan. It takes a couple of hours and isn`t expensive. I would say it`s a "must". It`s narrated too. Good for an August day to escape the heat of NY.

Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Centre) for great views - quicker to get up there than the Empire State. Circle Line is good. Maybe take in a Broadway show - half-price tickets on the day at booths in Times Sq and South Sea Port. Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum are great. Shop in Bloomingdale's or Macy's. Subway (ie underground railway) is quick and safe; buses give good views but aren't that fast. See the site of the World Trade Centre, take a free ferry to Staten Island, maybe go to the Statue of LIberty though I don't think you can go up inside any more. Research the price of any cheap goods you might like to buy.
Buy yourself a copy of the Brits Guide to New York. Loads of hints and tips, especially for us Brits (like where to find public toilets, translations of food items! etc), and as much tourist information as you'll probably need.
Other than that I highly recommend a visit to Grand Central Station, I LOVED it. And if you're there on a Sunday then you could certainly do worse than have Sunday brunch at the revolving restaurant in Times Square. It was a little on the pricey side, but then again I don't think I ate again all day! The food is wonderful, and you get lovely views as the restaurant revolves.

As has been mentioned, I would recommend the hop on hop off buses. You can get 24, 48 or 72 hour passes, and some include a night tour. When I got mine in Feb, it included free entry to Empire State Building (another must), a free river cruise and some other things I paid no attention to! We got on and off at most attractions, spent some time wherever and then got back on.
The Staten Island ferry is a good way to get a free and different view of the skyline and of the Statue of Liberty.
For the same reason, I would also recommend a helicopter ride.
I also enjoyed the walk from Brooklyn, over the bridge back in to Manhattan.
