Holiday ideas
Right, I need to brace myself for worst case scenario, in that I wont be able to go on holiday in the coming weeks (volcano!).
So, I need ideas of places to visit, be it for a few days or a whole week. It can either be in the UK or Europe, but obviously without flying, and no driving either. I live in Cheshire, so need to bear that in mind with travelling times/costs (not as accessible to such journeys as eurostar without quite a trek!)
Thank you all in advance x

It gives you unlimited rail travel after 0845 (or at any time at weekends and bank holidays) for any 4 days of your choosing over an 8 day period, throughout the whole of this area:

You`re a bit limited if you don`t want to drive anywhere. From Crewe you can get Virgin Trains to London and connect onto the Eurostar and go to Bruges which is quite nice. You could go on the ferry to Ireland. You could also look at National Express to the West Country. A well kept secret are the Isles of Scilly. You could go to Penzance on the train and get the ferry. If you get reasonable weather it`s lovely there. Don`t write off flying until the last minute. You never know with the volcano. It`s hit an miss and you could be OK.
I was going to suggest the ferry to Ireland.
The cotswolds are lovely and doesn't take long on the train from Manchester with only one change. You would need a car to travel about though unless you look at an organised coach tour.
You could head for Edinburgh on the train and take some tours out from there further up into Scotland as well.
