uk citizen looking at getting a green card - police records / charges
2 Answers
hi all
me and my girlfriend have a long term plan to live in america, i have immediate family there and she has a dual citizenship between the uk and the usa. we aren't married yet but will be and i imagine it may make things easier to get into america if we are.
the problem is although i have no criminal record about maybe 8 / 9 years ago i was charged with different crimes labelled under the computer misuse act. Anyway to make a long story shorter all charges against me were dropped after about a year and a half waiting to hear what was happening. so nothing ever went to court and everything against me was dropped.
so does this make me clean or is this information still likely to be held against me?
i know its not a easy process getting into america but apart from that one thing there is nothing what so ever against my name, not even a bad credit rating :)
i was just wondering if anyone had any insight before we start the process rolling, i know i will prob need to contact a immigration lawyer and i'll prob need to contact some authority in the uk to find out about the charges against me (that were dropped)
i just hope something so stupid doesn't effect our future plans
thank you in advance for any help you may be able to offer

I recommend that you go to your local police station and ask for a subject access request form. On this, you pay £10 and you will get access to any data the police hold on you - be aware to make sure you ask for checks on the PNC aswell as local force computers. You will be able to see before hand whether there is any information still held. Good luck.
