Is it ok to film in the streets of Manhatten?

I'm off to Manhatten and want to make a short film for my university work. I've been wondering whether they are ok with filming on the streets or if it's seen as a bit dodgy or even illegal? Anyone know if it's ok?

I think that if its a profit making project then you need permission from the relevant agency within the Mayor's Office.
