Anyone been to Cyprus in December or any where else its hot?

How cozy is it?

Struggling to get Cyprus from Scottish Airports AI for 7nights over Christmas -really struggling -does Cyprus close down in December do you know?

Failing Cyprus -anyone got a personal recommendation for same deal ^^ so we can hone our search in?

Looking like we are gonna have to have a transfer so cant go too far :(

(Thats the Carribean out then sadly)

Any personal recommendations or advice most welcome -we are going in circles at the moment.

Can`t answer about AI in Cyprus at Christmas but it won`t be very hot. Nowhere in Europe is very hot at that time of year. The best would be the Canaries. Sharm el Sheik in Egypt can be a bit warmer and there are some quite good deals there.

what does having a transfer mean? Why does it mean you can't go far? What's your definition of far?

Cheers 2327SJ -think its looking increasingly like the Canaries -it didnt look like Cyprus wasnt as warm as we would want.

bedknobs -in Scotland we sometimes have to transfer at Stanstead or any other London airport for our onward journey which does add a fair few hours onto the travelling hours-dependant on destination and onward journey.We dont want to have an 8hr flight with transfers for a 7 day break,.We dont want to go to australia for example and bedknobs you have just given me the best laugh of the day thank you :).Quick fire Q's and no help -hope I passed lol.
O btw -we're not country hicks -we've even been to Cuba but that was 14 nights.O and OH has been to America even several times plus we've almost exhausted Europe, just that we normally go to out home in Spain at Christmas but we are renting to an Oil company at the moment.Phew -did i pass? :)

sorry if i offended you. When i asked about your definition of "far" i was asking because you will probably have to go to Africa at least to get hot in the winter - i have often seen the gambia recommended for hot winter holidays

We are going to Tenerife for the New Year, I think that is the warmest place to be before going to the Carribean or Australia. Not sure about Malta or Cyprus though quite a few people winter over in Cyprus.

The only flights around Christmas from Scotland to Cyprus are as follows:

Glagow to Paphos, Wednesdays only, with Thomson
(Currently offered at £348.98 per person return, out on 22nd & back on 29th)

Edinburgh to Paphos, Wednesdays and Saturdays only (with no flight on Christmas Day), with easyJet.
(Currently offered at £210.98 per person return, out on 22nd and back on 29th).

I would love to go to the Gambia -need to twist a certain arm ATM...

AYG -we have been looking at the Canaries and actually found a lovely place in Fuertenventura - may be too quiet not sure.
Been to Cyprus a couple of times and love it -Not sure its warm enough and the hotels we looked at seem to close down 31/10/10 which is strange.
Back to the drawing board -we're now at loggerheads -need a holiday from the stress of trying to find a blooming holiday :(

The coastal areas of Cyprus have typical daily maximum temperatures of around 18C in December (falling to around 11C overnight). On average there's 133mm of rain in December, which is well over twice Edinburgh's average December rainfall of 57mm.

Fuerteventura is nice, we were there for our Golden Wedding last March it is much quieter there, it was warm and sunny. I prefer it to Tenerife, but we are going to Tenerife with some friends this year.

The Gambia sounds great but a long way to travel for a week.

Hi, my sister went to Gambia recently and although she said it was nice, there were things she didn't like such as beggars everywhere. Even when she went to the beach there were security men there to help keep the beggars away from the holiday makers. I know some people are not worried about being hassled but some don't like it and it can spoil what was otherwise a really nice holiday.

Hi I have travelled to Cyprus several times for Christmas and New Year, no it doesnt close down (some of the restuarants do) but most shops, and eating places are open. Weather is about 68-70 degres. I have always stayed at the Aliathon in Pafos (you can do Hotel or self-catering) and there are plenty of excursions to go on.Hope this is of some help to you

AYG -Fuertenventura and Lanzarote are currently front runners (just been looking up about Lanzorote so not too sure for winter hol -dont know if theres an awful lot to do if weather is rotten).
theshedman -did more homework on Gambia -strangely a few AB posts came up when i googled and I dont think I could endure the beggars :(

i was cheap as well, i booked a single room and got given a massive double, the food was ace. it was a great hol!

My wife and I spent two weeks in Cyprus in January 2005. We stayed in Paphos and toured the island in a hire car. We had a wonderful time. The weather was nice and the temperature was about 70 every day. We didn't have any bad weather and we ame home with suntans.

One advantage of that time of year is that everywhere's quiet and peaceful. Restaurants, shops, car hire etc are quiet and prices are much lower than during the busy season. One day we drove to the ski resort on Mount Olympus in the Troodos Mountains and spent the morning trudging through knee-deep snow watching the skiers. Then we drove down to Limassol and spent the afternoon sunning ourselves on the beach!

We spent a christmas in Tunisia, reasonable cost at the time, and very pleasantly warm. Life carried on as usual.

The weather's pretty good in the Canaries all year round Dris - although it's always windy! I too prefer Fuerteventura for a quiet holiday but Tenerife has a lot going for it.

I went to Tunisia over Christmas once and it was pleasantly mild. I went there in mid-December a couple of years ago and it was absolutely freezing though sunny during the day. If you want anything like guaranteed warmth you'll have to go further - Canaries or Gambia probably. There's also Florida, which is generally warm, especially in the south (Miami/Fort Lauderdale/Keys), and has lots of flights.

Fluffy -checked -was excited but no direct flight from Scotland at Christmas time and boy I uber checked :(

Andyvon -Cyprus was our first choice as we have been there before.We have spent the last 4 or 5 yrs in Spain and its dead at Christmas -like no shops open and litelarly no-one walking the streets -cozy but still jersey weather and cold at night.(we are rural Spain tho) So ya reckon that life goes on over that time in Cyprus? Just a little sun would be fab.Might look farther into that -cheers !!

jamesnan -as fluffy -I was really into that but just no flights from Scotland -duller cos i quite fancied it but for 7 days a connecting flight would be a hassle.
