Best currency for Turkey

Hi - can anyone advise me what is the best currency to take to Turkey please? |And whether I should get it there or here?

Take a small amount from here, but I've been to Turkey 3 times and the little shops are best for changing money - good rates (better than the UK) and no charges for any amount . Obviously the hotels' rates were less and some do charge commission.

Turkish Lira (currently about 2.25 to the £) are used in Turkey.

In many of the towns popular with tourists many of the shops and restaurants show their prices in both Lira and Sterling (and some even in Sterling only!) but the conversion rate is not so good. In most tourist locations you can change Sterling into Lira at quite good rates – sometimes better than you can get in the UK. But take cash as many places do not change Travellers’ Cheques, or if they do the rate is poor. If you intend to travel away from the popular spots then I suggest you get your Lira in the UK.

Don’t forget to take a £10 note for your visa fee which is payable upon arrival. I purposely say “a £10 note” because, depending on the mood of the immigration official, they may not accept £5 notes (and they certainly will not accept coins), they may not give you change and (most annoyingly) they may even not accept a £20 note for two people. (They will take the £20 from you, but say this is for one person only and will not give you one of the hundreds of £10 notes they have as change).

in the large resorts the Euro is the most popular, thanks to the Germans, they love the British pound and will always take it, however we always use there Lira and stick to it, that way we don't get confused.
I take about 300 Lira with me then use the cash machines when over there when I need it, a bank transaction is about £2-50 but it saves you walking about with lot's of money in your pocket.

Hi Sally, don't know where in the UK you are, but just to add to New Judge's answer, it is English Notes they accept not Scottish ones.

Antalya.The hotel and all the shops in the area have goods marked up in Euros.

Also be careful if a trader wants to sell you £ for Lira especially if you are near the end of your holiday. There can be forged £10 and £20 notes around.

Possible one of the best places in the UK to change money before you go is http://www.bestforeig...k-exchange-rates.php. have a look at their website and compare with Travelex etc. Unfortunately they only have offices in London but they also do by post via Royal mail special delivery for a modest fee.
