If you just want to renew your passport and you still look 'recognisible' from your old passport, you can do it online. http://www.ukpa.gov.uk/  Just fill in the form, give them your credit card number for the �42 renewal fee, they send you the form, you sign it, enclose 2 photos and old passport and they send you the new one. I did mine last month and the whole process took less than 10 days.
