Venice - Acqua alta

Why is there a 'season' for high water in Venice (round about October, November, December)? They occasionally get a higher than normal tide at other times of the year, but it's a rare event. They get higher than usual tides at full moon and new moon, like everywhere else, but why should the tides be extra extra high during these months?

We went to Venice in April a few years back for our wedding anniversary and were greeted by air raid sirens in St Mark's Square on our final day - duckboards, queues of Japanese tourists all trying to stay together and traffic police directing pedestrian traffic outside the Duomo! As Buenchico said - high tides and a strong scirocco over several days.
