Thinking of a weekend away, somewhere quaint but with things to see and do during the day. and a hotel or Travel Lodge type place, must be walking distance of one of these areas, or a nice village or town to stay nearby ... any suggestions ? Nice walks, villagey antiquey shops etc.

I'd favour Winchester and Windsor over Maidenhead, both towns have a plenty to do although I think Windsor has more for a weekend. Both have oodles of hotels but I can't recommend any as I live too close to need one.

Henley and Marlow are worth considering too, good river walks, good eating and nice shops to poke around in.
Windsor has the castle and great park. Winchester has the cathedral, round table and South Downs way for walks.

Both are steeped in history. I guess Winchester would be less 'touristy' and more quirky.
