That suggests that you should look to the west or the south of the Island. Paleochora might be one possibility. See the video here:

But after looking at it, think is probably a bit too far out (I reckon would be about a two hour transfer from the airport - ?)

I've only been to Koutouloufari- and I loved it. 15 minutes from Malia by car, there's a busy place down the hill, but Koutouloufari is on a hillside with lots of restaurants and bars together, and plenty of nice places to walk and chill out. It's not good for people who can't walk too far though, when I say on a hillside, I mean if the locals see you trying to walk up it, they'll give you a lift for free...
